EVENT SPEAKERS

Dr. Caryn Honig, MEd, RD, LD

Dr. Caryn Honig is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, a professor at University of Houston, founder and director of Poppy's Run for Life, and a pioneer in the treatment of eating disorders.

In the early 1980’s, Dr. Honig was a nationally ranked tennis player on the junior tennis circuit when she was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (binge-eating/purging type). She also suffered from compulsive overexercise.

During this time, little was known about eating disorders, and treatment was sparse.

Through her recovery, Dr. Honig found her purpose and passion: helping others who struggled with eating disorders and disordered eating. For almost 30 years, Dr. Honig owned and operated a private practice in Houston, offering nutritional counseling to patients who struggled with eating disorders and disordered eating.

She has been an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Houston for the past 18 years. After her father’s death by suicide in 2022, Dr. Honig closed her practice and founded Poppy’s Run For Life, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that raises money and awareness for suicide prevention. Dr. Honig and her husband, Scott Schepps, also established the Caryn Honig DU Tennis Endowment Scholarship Fund.

Caryn is an avid runner and triathlete. To date, she has completed 45 full marathons (22 Houston Marathons), numerous triathlons, one full Ironman triathlon and one 50-mile endurance running race.
